PETA’s ‘Bear’ Travels Internationally to Save His Skin US/Prince Charles tour

A PETA member dressed in a bear costume followed Prince Charles throughout his first visit to the United States since his wedding in April, urging him to persuade his mother to switch to faux fur for the Buckingham Palace Guards’ bearskin hats. Holding a sign that read, “Bear Hugs, Not Bear Hats”, our “bear” demanded Prince Charles’ attention at all his stops in Washington and San Francisco. The honeymoon is over for Prince Charles – the newlywed prince is already being nagged by a bear of a critic!

Some of the Bear’s Encounters With the Prince
At Hanover Square in New York City, Camilla, the Duchess of York, accepted a “Bearskins Are for Bears, Not Guards” leaflet from the PETA bear.

At Georgetown University, where a huge crowd had gathered, Prince Charles saw the bear and pointed, but he disappointed the bear and onlookers when he refused an offer for a bear hug.

At the Farmers’ Market in Point Reyes Station, the bear shook hands with Prince Charles while the bear’s friends invited the prince for a pint with the bear at a local saloon. Sadly, he declined. The bear was shown on CNN holding his “Bear Hugs, Not Bear Skins” sign, and his friend Matt Rice from PETA was interviewed.

At the Ferry Building in San Francisco, the bear waited patiently amongst the others who were desperate to shake the prince’s hand. The bear was very sad when Prince Charles looked him in the eye and declined his offer of a bear hug.
